Outlook Money Profiles Poscitech & Fitaide in its Cover Story on Startups

Outlook Money, a leading Indian business magazine, profiled Poscitech in its review of 25 Startups with initial investment less than 5 lakhs (~$12K). It also picks mobile apps as the most exciting area to be in – particularly for an Indian market where less than 1% have broadband access, while mobile penetration is galloping to universality. Generations of Indians are likely to access & experience the internet primarily through the mobile phone.

Top 30 Ranking US, Thanks to Apple Featuring Fitaide

It’s been a week since Fitaide was featured by Apple on the front page of the incredibly crowded App Store – and that has give us much needed visibility. Prior to being featured, Fitaide had briefly touched top 200 amongst health & fitness apps in the US, following the listing, its ranking shot up and remained amongst Top 30 Apps in the Health & Fitness category in the US, peaking at #27. Similarly #29 in Canada, another major market.

In many smaller markets, Fitaide reached Top 10 in the category and Top 100 overall. This included – India, Bulgaria, Brazil, Ecuador, Malta amongst others – its great to see the app being so well received across the world. In total it has been downloaded in close to 50 countries worldwide within ~1 month of launch!  Our sales in this week have been roughly 40-50x higher than the period prior to the listing – providing some much needed funding for planned updates to the application.

Great illustration of what you can achieve via the App Store today, if you can rise up above the crowd.

Apple Features Fitaide under New and Noteworthy Apps!

Was surprised to see Fitaide’s ranking shooting up this evening and discovered that Fitaide had been featured in the New & Newsworthy Section on the App Store in US, Canada and over 65 other markets! As a result Fitaide is currently ranked #46 in the US Health & Fitness category within paid apps and well above 50 in a few other markets.

I sat and scanned through every country with an iTunes store to see where it was featured – essentially it looks like all countries other than WE, ANZ & Japan which seem to work with a different list of apps. Delighted at the recognition!

On January 16th, 2010 by | Comments Off on The joys(!) of entrepreneurship

The joys(!) of entrepreneurship

Despite my previous experience of setting up new ventures within a organisation and the many entrepreneurs I’ve spoken to, there are still a few things that have  surprised me about being an entrepreneur.

Here’s a short list of the unexpected:

1/ At the top of the list I would put connecting (or reconnecting) with people. Being (mostly) on my own has forced me to reach out to people in my wider network, to bounce off ideas / get reaction and seek moral support. I’m surprised by how many long-lost contacts I have reconnected with and how willing, nay eager, people have been to provide feedback and input.

2/ Openness … as an entrepreneur all you have is your wits and the very humbling recognition that you could be 100% wrong! I find that I’m not able to bring the same level of die-hard conviction that I used to display during my past life in a large organisation. Perhaps its a recognition that as a small firm there’s little you control or maybe its because your pay cheque is completely dependent on the success of your idea!

Whatever the reason, it does  force you to consider alternative views and be flexible. The real challenge is to keep that open-mind without losing sight of the value in what you’ve created.

3/ The benefits of small organisations are well recognised … flexibility, speed, creativity etc. However I think these virtues are somewhat exaggerated (perhaps due to a poetic sense of support for David vs. Goliath). Large organisations have huge advantages … in the variety of skills available on tap, the market presence and visibility and in being able to solve a problem systematically. Where they seem to fail is in lacking leadership i.e. the ability to harness this talent and capability towards a common goal.

In the beginning

It’s a little over 3 months since I started on this journey …  and what a journey its been! In those 3 months, I saw one major change of direction in the basic design of the app, quite a few changes in its feature set and design elements and many many changes in its name!

What hasn’t changed is the core purpose behind the app – to help users improve their fitness and overall health from doing the things they naturally enjoy. There’s tons of research showing that sustainable fitness occurs when we discover activities we genuinely enjoy and are able to do them in the company of others. That’s why ActiSense was conceived and is being developed.

A lot of time has been spent in researching this area and developing this app, bringing it close to launch, nevertheless I feel that I’m really at the start of a quest … to discover whom this application is most useful for, how it helps (or hinders) them and how relevant it is (or not) to its users.

Now that my website is finally coming together, I hope to capture the learning for all of you interested in hearing about it. Keep visiting!
